Iraqi Elections

Iraqi Elections

"Even if one believes that the Iraq war was a mistake...

"Even if one maintains that the Bush Administration misled and even lied to the public on WMDs to persuade the nation to go to war with Iraq...

"Even if one is appalled by the lack of a post-election plans for Iraq...

"Even if one argues that the Bush Administration failed to provide sufficient troops to secure the country and had little though for the long occupation...

"Even if one is angered by the Bushies exploitation of the Iraq war for political gain...

"Even if a progressive accepts all or some of the above, I contend that the democratic left should hope for a positive outcome in all future Iraqi elections. Millions of brave Iraqis will risk their lives to vote. We must honor the democratic aspirations of Iraqis and the selfless courage of our troops despite our profound differences with the Bushies. Fascism and terrorism must not succeed in Iraq."

Necessary words, and not just because I for one am sick to the point of puking of hearing that people whose hope for the best is tempered by a refusal to shut their brains off are actually hoping for failure so we can enjoy a round of I told you so.

As if there'd ever been a time in our nation's history when being proven right seemed to count for so little.
